AKHA Children's Home

The AKHA Children's Home is geared to provide immediate relief and support for marginalized and underserved AKHA children, especially boys, in the northern Thailand region. This home is based on a successfully proven model currently serving young girls. It provides children with a loving and nurturing environment, enabling them to achieve their full potential as human beings and as members of a larger community. These children come from extreme circumstances that deny them hope for the future. Children are encouraged to develop pride in their heritage and maintain all healthy relationships within their home community; many of these children return to their villages and act as agents for positive change. The impact of this project extends beyond merely being a home for children in need.

In addition to having a loving and stable family environment, the children attend school and progress as far as they are able in the Thai educational system. Though difficult to measure, prejudices often place glass ceilings on educational progress for those from the hill-tribes. Akha indigenous culture and heritage must be emphasized if it is to be maintained. Through reading and writing in the Akha language, interaction with Akha elders, and understanding and attending Akha traditions, the Akha customs will continue for generations to come.

At the Akha Children's Home, children will develop pride and leadership ability in the context of their heritage, where they would not otherwise have the opportunity to realize their importance and intrinsic value.
